What is Microsoft Virtual PC?



Microsoft Virtual PC was the old name of Windows Virtual PC. This programs which actually offered by Microsoft provides virtualization to one of the best operating systems in the world i.e. Microsoft Windows. Hosted version of the Windows was released by technology giant Microsoft in the month of July in 2006 and it was absolutely free of cost. Still it is a free product.


It was announced by Microsoft in the month of August in 2006 that Macintosh computers that are known as Intel-based computers will not be able to port by the Macintosh-hosted version. Most recent release which has been made by Microsoft in the category of Windows Virtual PC can only be hosted on the latest operating system of Microsoft i.e. Windows 7.



What is Microsoft Virtual PC actually? Well a standard PC is being virtualized with the help of Windows Virtual PC along with all associated hardware. All supported and installed versions of Microsoft’s own operation systems, i.e. Windows, can easily and effectively be run within this PC known as Virtual PC. Probably Linux is the other operating system that can also be virtualized through Windows Virtual PC but it is not officially recommended and supported by Microsoft.


Following is the minimum requirement that is being requested by Microsoft, if you want to configure Windows Virtual PC:




  • 32 or 64 bit processor of at least 1 GHz

  • Though 1.25 GB is the minimum requirement for the memory but it is strongly recommended that RAM should be minimum 2 GB to get maximum output

  • Hardware Virtualization was also a compulsory requirement by Microsoft but it was removed by them from the list of required items on March 19, 2010
